Are free VPNs also safe?

Yes and no — it depends on the provider you select. Using one of the VPNs listed above is probably secure, although we can’t make any guarantees. But, there are a lot of sketchy VPN providers out there that should be avoided at all costs.

The reason why is that someone will try and somehow make you money. Running a VPN service is costly, and payers have to make money in one way or another.

So if it doesn’t make it through the subscription fee, it can be made through ads (which is understandable but annoying) or by selling your personal information or your browsing history — or both — to the highest bidder. Essentially, a free VPN provider could be doing the exact thing it should be protecting you from.

To keep things in perspective, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) reviewed 263 VPN applications on the Play Store a few years ago and found appalling results. Eighteen percent of VPNs do not encrypt data at all, while 75 percent use third-party tracking libraries.

When deciding whether a particular VPN is reliable, research is the key content. Do some digging online and check out the various publications, as well as what users are saying about it.

Also, make sure that the company is not based in any country with a bad track record on online privacy like China or Russia. You can never be sure that a VPN has kept its promises, but research will give you at least some peace of mind.
