To get a business drone license from The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), you’ll need to follow these steps:

  • Be at least 16 years old are you?
  • Pass the Aeronautical Knowledge Test are you. You can register to take the test at The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)-approved knowledge testing center.
  • Apply for a Remote Pilot Certificate for you. You can apply using The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)s online IACRA system 48 hours after taking the Aeronautical Knowledge Test.
  • Pass a background check by the Transportation Security Administration for you.

Who needs a drone license?

Currently, you just need to have a drone license in the United States if you are operating for business reasons.

You do not need a drone license if you are flying a drone for enjoyment.

How does the FAA define business to use for drones?

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) defines commercial use broadly and you need an own drone license if the intent behind your flight is non-recreational. Generally, it does not matter whether you directly or indirectly received coverage for your flight.

During a webinar in 2019, The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) went so far as to say that checking your gutters with your drone would require a drone license because the intent of the drone was not to have entertainment.

Additionally, as a business drone pilot, you need to register every drone individually. This can be done on The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) DroneZone and it costs 5 Dollars per drone.

One thing, The test-fee is non-refundable. If you fail, you will have to pay 160 dollars to take the exam again.  And obviously, you will need to wait 14 days before you can retake the exam if you are failed.

How long does it take to time to get a Drone license?

The test is no walk-in-the-park and it includes a lot of specialized flight experience. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)  recommends 20 hours of studying always.

To fly a drone as a business pilot in the USA state of New York you are required to follow the terms of The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA),  Part 107 Small UAS Rule (Part 107), which includes passing The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA),  Aeronautical Knowledge Test to obtain a Drone license.
